Selection indicator

Marching ants

Animated dashes running along the object's own outline rather than around a box.

1. On screen
Fits comfortably inside the view
2. Partly off screen
Runs past one edge
3. Huge, partly visible
One edge inside, the rest far off
4. Covers the view
No edge on screen at all

How it is built

The outline MUST be clipped to the viewport first. Unclipped, this is the original stall wearing a nicer costume.

Why choose it

The most immediately legible as selection. It is the convention every drawing tool has trained people on.

What to watch

Highest risk of the five. A dashed stroke on an enormous path is precisely what cost 315 ms per frame.
